Video of Novocaine Allergic Patient Getting Numb with Benadryl and IV Sedation

Stella came to us with a very unique but very real problem:

Two different allergists had diagnosed her with allergic/adverse reactions to several types of dental local anesthetics.

Prior to her seeing the allergist, she had experienced two frightening episodes at her other dentist as a direct result of a dental local anesthetic injection. Both incidents required immediate medical attention and subsequent trips to the hospital. She then sought out two different allergists to test her – and they both told her the same thing:

Stella could never again receive any “-caine” local anesthetic.

Unfortunately, Stella still had significant dental needs – dental treatment that would be impossible to do without pain control. Stella then went about researching what her options were.

This led Stella to our office in Orange, Connecticut. After extensive research, she learned that we are the only office on the entire East Coast publicly offering a solution for “novocaine allergic” patients without the use of general anesthesia. And that is to use Benadryl (generic name diphenhydramine) as a local anesthetic – combined with outpatient IV sedation.

Watch a video documenting Stella’s experience here:

Video Structure

We broke the video down into sections:

  1. Part 1 – Stella talking about her experiences. Stella describes in detail her adverse reaction to the local anesthetic and the testing she underwent at the allergist. She also talks about the successful treatment she’s received at our office using this technique.
  2. Part 2 – Stella’s treatment using Benadryl as Local Anesthetic. In this part, you will see Dr. Nick Calcaterra describe the technique he is about to use, and then perform a root canal procedure on a live nerve on Stella.

The video clocks in at 11 minutes. But if you are one of the rare individuals who cannot tolerate traditional local anesthetics, you can see exactly how we can overcome your allergic/adverse tendencies using this technique.
